No, the Breaking Bad finale didn’t signal the end of the dark cable drama; there are still plenty of anti-heroes with dubious moral codes running around on the tube. And HBO hopes viewers will still be jonesing for the dark stuff when when it premieres True Detective, a pitch-black limited series starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.
Premiering January 12, the series follows a pair of detectives revisiting a grisly homicide case they investigated in the mid-’90s. The eight-episode series, written by novelist Nic Pizzolatto and directed by Cary Fukunagu (Sin Nombre, Jane Eyre), will examine how the case has deeply affected the detectives’ lives and how the investigation still haunts them almost a decade later.
Judging by the new trailer, True Detective is aiming to be one of the darkest shows to come out of HBO in a while. I feel compelled to dub this show, The HBO Handsome Soul-Crushing Hour. Take a look:
